Arch : Impulse Series Felting
Arch : Impulse Series Felting
This piece is made by first felting a collection of ‘wool chips’ out of Merino Wool. I then select a palette of chips and toss them around a bit to see where they fall, and how the colours and shapes play off of each other. After that, I lay them out on a background of fluffy, natural Merino Wool, and coax them into a design based off of the spontaneous tossing. The layers are then wet-felted together and finished in the dryer to give them that nubbley shrunken texture.
The end result is an undulating swirl of colour and shape, that brings to mind a group of dancers, or a teeming tide pool.
This piece sits in a flush-mount frame made of White Oak that I helped to construct. It is one-of-a-kind, and belongs to a series I’ve titled Impulse because of the spontaneous nature of the process.
Framed measurements: 14.5 x 19.5 x 1.25”
